SAFETY COMMITTEE Minutes SEPTEMBER 21, 2000

I. CALL MEETING TO ORDER:
The Employee Safety Committee meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. in the Lower
Level Conference Room with the following representatives
PRESENT: Brian Bitterlin, Fire Department
Susan Schwartz, Library
Norm Nemec, Police Department
Mark Stevens, Public Works Department
Michael A. Crotty, Assistant Village Manager
ABSENT: Administration,Finance & Engineering Departments
Greg Krob, Sports Core Departments
Joyce Resh, Secretary
IL APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion by Mark Stevens, seconded by Norm Nemec, to approve the minutes of the
Employee Safety Committee meeting of July 20, 2000 as submitted. VOICE VOTE:
`— Motion carried. Minutes are to be dated and posted in respective departments.
III. DISCUSSION OF INCIDENTS
The Committee discussed the incident of a Library employee's injury when lifting a
storage container full of fabric, laminate, wood and metal samples for the new Library
above her desk. It was noted that the current Library lacks adequate storage, and the new
Library will provide for safer storage.
The vehicle accident of a patrol officer was discussed noting that the officer was in
pursuit of an offender on a motorcycle who failed to stop for police. The pursuit
continued into Westmont where the patrol officer's vehicle struck a vehicle stopped
southbound on Route 83 due to another jurisdiction's roadblock. The patrol officer spent
one night in the hospital and was released. The accident is under investigation. It was
noted that the Department does have a police vehicle pursuit policy.
The incident of a Public Works employee's heat exhaustion after installing blacktop on
the safety pathway was discussed. The Committee recommended that water coolers be
purchased and available for employees working in extreme conditions. Assistant Village
Manager Crotty will follow up and discuss the purchase with the Public Works Director
and the Executive Safety Committee.

V. TRAINING IDEAS: None.
VI. DISCUSSION OF SAFETY SUGGESTIONS: None.
VII. GENERAL DISCUSSION:
1. Loss Evaluation Assistant Program Report LEAP for 2000
Assistant Village Manager Crotty informed the Committee that the Village score for the
Year 2000 evaluation is 983 out of 1,000. He thanked the Committee for its efforts. He
indicated that the LEAP worksheet is being revised for the next evaluation, and it is likely
that the topics covered in the current LEAP will account for about 30 percent of the next
worksheet.

Motion by Susan Schwartz, seconded by Brian Bitterlin, to adjourn the meeting at 9:36
a.m.
