SAFETY COMMITTEE Minutes April 19, 2001

I. CALL MEETING TO ORDER:
The Employee Safety Committee meeting was called to order at 9:10 a.m. in the Upper
Level Conference Room with the following representatives
PRESENT: Debbie Franzone, Administration, Finance &Engineering Departments
Susan Schwartz, Library
Bob Mudra, Police Department
Greg Krob, Sports Core Departments
Michael A. Crotty, Assistant Village Manager
Joyce Resh, Secretary
ABSENT: Fire Department
Public Works Department
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion by Debbie Franzone, seconded by Greg Krob, to approve the minutes of the
Employee Safety Committee meeting of March 15, 2001 as submitted. VOICE VOTE:
Motion carried. Minutes are to be dated and posted in respective departments.
III. DISCUSSION OF INCIDENTS:
The incident of damage to a fire vehicle when the driver attempted to park in an out-of-
state parking structure which did not have adequate clearance was discussed noting that
the driver should have used more caution, as most facilities are clearly marked with the
facility's clearance.
The incident of muscle strain to the right shoulder of a fire captain during training was
discussed.
A firefighter/paramedic's knee injury during a training session was discussed noting that
firefighters as well as police officers often find themselves in situations where the
possibility of injury exists due to the inability to control the environment.
IV. DEPARTMENTAL SAFETY INSPECTION REPORTS:
Committee members were reminded to continue to submit their departmental safety
inspection reports on a monthly basis. Assistant Village Manager Crotty noted that if
their area is under construction, they should submit their report with a note indicating the
area under construction.

Assistant Village Manager Crotty informed the Committee that IRMA might schedule a
hazard inspection visit in June. The departments that have been inspected in the past are
Administration, Fire, Police and Public Works, and he will alert the department when the
inspection is scheduled.
V. TRAINING IDEAS: None.
VI. DISCUSSION OF SAFETY SUGGESTIONS: None.
VII. GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Assistant Village Manager Crotty noted that the regularly scheduled February Executive
Safety Committee meeting was cancelled, thus the Employee Safety Committee's
suggestion regarding the Safety Incentive Program will be discussed at their May
meeting. If approved, the change would take place at the first of next year.
Representative Mudra noted that during a police officer's evaluation, points are deducted
in several areas if he has had an avoidable accident. Assistant Village Manager Crotty
noted that he has been discussing this situation with the Police Chief.
Committee members were reminded to submit their suggestions for 2001-2002 loss
control objectives.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT:
Motion by Susan Schwartz, seconded by Debbie Franzone,to adjourn the meeting at 9:25
a.m.
