Minutes - 09/18/2003 - Safety Committee SAC - MIA(- f- /f--4e)a 3 VILLAGE OF OAK BROOK EMPLOYEE SAFETY COMMITTEE Minutes SEPTEMBER 18, 2003 UNOFFICIAL UNTIL APPROVED AS WRITTEN X OR AS AMENDED ON November 20, 2003 I. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: The Employee Safety Committee meeting was called to order at 9:01 a.m. in the Upper Level Conference Room with the following representatives PRESENT: David Zima, Administration, Finance & Engineering Departments Michael Janney, Fire Department Susan Schwartz, Library Darren Martens, Public Works Department Greg Krob, Sports Core Departments Richard B. Boehm, Village Manager Joyce Resh, Secretary ABSENT: Police Department Darren Martens was recognized as the new Committee representative for the Public Works Department. II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Motion by Greg Krob, seconded by David Zima, to approve the minutes of the Employee Safety Committee meeting of June 19, 2003 as submitted. VOICE VOTE: Motion carried. Minutes are to be dated and posted in respective departments. 11I. DISCUSSION OF INCIDENTS: The incident of damage to the tailgate of a public works vehicle which was struck by an air compressor which roll down a hill while in the process of being pulled to be hooked up to a hitch was discussed. Manager Boehm indicated that this incident was determined to be avoidable. Representative Zima noted that the incident report indicated that the employee was injured. Representative Martens indicated that he was unaware of any injury to the employee. The secretary was instructed to follow up with Marlene Hellwig, Payroll/Benefits Specialist, for the correct indication of the form. The destruction of a portable radio which was run over by a fire truck was discussed noting that the radio should be anchored to prevent it from being knocked out of the truck. Representative Janney noted that newer vehicles have an on-board radio charger installed to hold radios. There was no indication on the incident report of which vehicle was in use. Manager Boehm requested the secretary to follow up on this incident. EMPLOYEE SAFETY COMMITTEE Page 1 of 2 September 18, 2003 Minutes IV. DEPARTMENTAL SAFETY INSPECTION REPORTS: Manager Boehm reminded Committee members that safety inspection reports are to be submitted monthly. He will send a memorandum to all members indicating inspection dates and sample Safety Inspection Checklist sheets. Representative Zima explained the inspection procedure noting the importance of inspecting fire extinguishers indicating the date of the inspection on the back of the card attached to the extinguisher. V. TRAINING IDEAS: None. VI. DISCUSSION OF SAFETY SUGGESTIONS: Representative Zima noted his concern for boxes stored in a walkway area of the Administration/Finance departments. Manager Boehm indicated that the second floor of the old library would be used for storage and the first floor will be used by the Historical Society. Representative Krob noted his concern with traffic on Polo Drive which is used heavily during soccer games. He suggested the installation of yield and stop signs. Manager Boehm requested Representative Krob to discuss this with the department heads to determine what needs to be done and what signage needs to be installed. VII. GENERAL DISCUSSION: Manager Boehm discussed the second quarter IRMA Membership Loss Report noting that the Village is at the level of"satisfactory". He indicated that we are doing well with fewer accidents. Consequently, he suggested that the Employee Safety Committee meet every other month. He reminded Committee members to continue monthly department safety inspections to be submitted on the second Friday of each month. VIII.
