SAFETY COMMITTEE Minutes JANUARY 15, 2004

Village Manager Boehm introduced Jeffrey P. Moline as the Village's new Assistant
Village Manager.
I. CALL MEETING TO ORDER:
The Employee Safety Committee meeting was called to order at 9:10 a.m. in the Upper
Level Conference Room with the following representatives
PRESENT: David Zima, Administration, Finance & Engineering Departments
Susan Schwartz, Library
Norm Nemec, Police Department
Darren Martens, Public Works Department
Greg Krob, Sports Core Departments
Jeffrey P. Moline, Assistant Village Manager
Joyce Resh, Secretary
ABSENT: Fire Department
ALSO PRESENT: Robert R. Cronholm, Fire Chief
Jeff introduced himself indicating that he functions as the Risk Manager and is the
Village's IRMA representative. He will be handling both the Employee and Executive
Safety Committees.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion by Susan Schwartz, seconded by Greg Krob, to approve the minutes of the
Employee Safety Committee meeting of November 20, 2003 as submitted. VOICE
VOTE: Motion carried. Minutes are to be dated and posted in respective departments.
111. DISCUSSION OF INCIDENTS:
Representative Martens discussed the incident of a Public Works employee's corneal
abrasion to his right eye. He indicated that it is unknown what caused this, the employee
was able to continue to work and the incident was unavoidable.
Chief Cronholm discussed the incident of damage to the right rear tire and wheel cover of
a fire engine while responding to a call. He noted that the engine was traveling across a
narrow bridge and oncoming traffic caused the driver to move too close to the wall of the
bridge. He also noted that employees have been instructed to use a different route so that
they will avoid this narrow bridge, and surrounding fire departments have been notified of
the hazard.

Assistant Village Manager Moline inquired if Public Works employees have a problem
when crossing the narrow bridge. It was noted that they do not normally travel that
direction.
IV. DEPARTMENTAL SAFETY INSPECTION REPORTS:
Assistant Village Manager Moline discussed items indicated on the departmental reports.
Fire Chief Cronholm indicated that fire department items are being taken care of. The
eye wash station is missing from the gun range in the Police Department. Representative
Nemec stated that it was removed during the remodeling of the department and where
will the money come from for replacement. Assistant Village Manager Moline will check
into this. It was noted that no inspections have been submitted from Community
Development, Engineering and Information Services as these departments have no
representative to the Committee.
V. TRAINING IDEAS:
A copy of IRMA's video catalog was distributed to Committee members. Assistant
Village Manager Moline noted a wide variety of training videos are available.
VI. DISCUSSION OF SAFETY SUGGESTIONS:
Representative Schwartz noted a safety hazard at the Library when water drips from the
sun shade and ice forms on walkways. It was noted that the Public Works Department
has provided a bucket of salt at the doorway which employees can spread on the
walkway. The Library has an outside service for snow removal.
Representative Martens noted that buckets of salt have been placed at all doorways to
Village buildings and the Public Works department checks to see that they are filled. Any
employee can spread the salt when noting an icy patch.
VII. GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Safety Incentive Gift Certificates will be distributed to qualifying employees in the very
near future.
