Services/Purchasing&Engineering Departments
Marilyn Hanson, Library

Joyce Resh, Secretary
ABSENT: Fire Department
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: None.
III. DISCUSSION OF INCIDENTS:
A Police Officer's knee injury was discussed noting that while the officer was exiting his
vehicle, he slipped on a patch of ice, hitting his knee on the vehicle door. It was also
noted that this incident occurred while responding to a residential alarm in a subdivision
whose streets are privately maintained.
Damage to a police vehicle was discussed noting that while the officer was traveling
along 22nd Street, he looked down at his computer and drifted into another lane and struck
a vehicle. Discussion of this incident noted that the Police Department General Orders
indicate the safest way to use the computer is to pull over and stop to run a license plate,
but it is not always possible.
Assistant Village Manager Moline noted that we need to address the rise in the number of
accidents. Employees need to pay attention to their driving and be more conscious of
their surroundings. Alternate Police Department representative Calvello noted that for
the number of plates run, accidents are very few. Officers are always reminded of safe
work practices.

IV. DEPARTMENTAL SAFETY INSPECTION REPORTS:
Departmental reports are due the second Friday of each month.
V. TRAINING IDEAS:
Assistant Village Manager Moline noted that with the rise in accidents there is a need for
training and noted that rather than IRMA videos, does anyone have ideas.
Public Works noted that they had new videos from the State and IDOT.
Fire had a chiropractor lead a discussion which was a good program.
VI. DISCUSSION OF SAFETY SUGGESTIONS: None.
VII. GENERAL DISCUSSION:
1. Discussion of Safely Policy:
Assistant Village Manager Moline noted we need to make sure that employees are aware
of safe work practices. Does the Committee feel that they can have an active way to be
more pro-active? If the Committee voted on the incident (avoidable/unavoidable), the
Committee could make recommendations on how the incident could have been avoided.
Should employees be disciplined if they went against the rules?
Representative Nemec discussed the Safety Incentive Program noting earning points
quarterly might give employees an incentive to be more consciences, work more safely
and make an effort to be safe.
Representative Martens suggested a long-term award and give a bonus.
Assistant Village Manager Moline questioned do employees look that if they are safe do
they feel they will save the Village money?
Safety campaigns can be instituted. Fire noted that in the past they had a campaign for
"Safe Driving Days" and awards were days off.
Other safety rewards were suggested as cups, shirts, certificates, membership to the Park
District.
Assistant Village Manager Moline noted that all suggestions need to be made to the
Executive Safety Committee.
Assistant Village Manager Moline noted that we will continue this discussion at the next
meeting.
