RESOLUTION NO. R-514
A RESOLUTION CONCERNING TRUCK SAFETY AND THE
PROHIBITION OF LONGER COMBINATION VEHICLES
WHEREAS, highway traffic safety and the prevention of accidents is of
the utmost concern to all individuals using the Illinois Interstate Highway
and Tollway Sustem; and
WHEREAS, commercial "big rig" trucks pose certain safety concerns to
drivers of passenger cars and vans, and increase the rate and speed of
pavement and bridge deterioration; and
WHEREAS, the Federal government and the State of Illinois strictly
regulate the length and weight of trucks allowed to operate on designated
routes, tollways and the interstate highway system; and
WHEREAS, proposed legislation that would allow for dramatic increases in
the length and weight of trucks permitted to use the road and highway systems
of Illinoi3 is before the General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, longer combination vehicles such as triple trailers and twin
48-foot trailers with lengths of up to 110 feet long and weighing as much as
134,000 pounds have difficulty maneuvering safely in traffic, are unstable at
times when driven at higher speeds, and often cannot remain in their
designated lanes when turning at intersections, to and from driveways, and
onto highway entrance and exit ramps, thus posing even greater public safety
risks and accelerating the deterioration of curbs and road pavement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF
THE VILLAGE OF OAR BROOK, DU PAGE AND COOK COUNTIES, ILLINOIS that the
Village of Oak Brook support efforts that resist increasing the length and
weight of commercial trucks, and urge the Illinois General Assembly to
consider passing legislation to prohibit these types of vehicles from the
Illinois Interstate Highway and Tollway systems.
