A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE INSTALLATION
BY THE CITY OF OAKBROOK TERRACE
OF A RED LIGHT CAMERA AT ROUTE 83 AND 22nd STREET
WHEREAS, the City of Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois ( "Oakbrook Terrace's is considering the
commission of a study in order to attempt to justify the installation of a red light camera at the intersection
of Illinois Route 83 and 22nd Street ( "Intersection") in Oakbrook Terrace ( "Red Light Camera "); and
WHEREAS, the Intersection is immediately adjacent to the corporate boundaries of the Village of
Oak Brook and controls traffic entering the Village and its principal retail establishments, including the
Oakbrook Shopping Center, and
WHEREAS, red light cameras installed in other major retail centers such as the Woodfield Mall.
have had a negative influence on retail traffic and in some cases the cameras have been subsequently
removed, including Schaumburg's Woodfield Mall red light camera; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Oak Brook Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development
Partnership, which represents over 2,500 businesses in Oak Brook and Oakbrook Terrace, opposes the
installation of the Red Light Camera because it would have a significant negative impact on local
commerce in both Oak Brook and Oakbrook Terrace; and
WHEREAS, the Intersection was improved within the last year by the Illinois Department of
Transportation to enhance the flow of traffic and to reduce traffic accidents, thereby making any decision
regarding a Red Light Camera at the Intersection premature and most likely unnecessary; and
WHEREAS, as neighboring communities, the Village and Oakbrook Terrace must maintain a high
degree of intergovernmental cooperation and the installation of the Red Light Camera at a sensitive
location such as the Intersection calls for the highest degree of consensus and communication prior to any
steps toward the installation of the Red Light Camera; and
WHEREAS, based on current information, the installation of the Red Light Camera at the
Intersection is not in the best interests of the Village of Oak Brook and the City of Oakbrook Terrace.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of
Oak Brook, DuPage and Cook Counties, Illinois, as follows:
Section 1: The foregoing recitals are hereby incorporated into, and made a part of, this
Resolution as the findings of the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Oak Brook.
Section 2: The President and Board of Trustees for the Village of Oak Brook oppose, and
hereby respectfully request that at this time Oakbrook Terrace not commission a study of, or install, a red
light camera at the intersection of Illinois Route 83 and 22nd Street.
Section 3. The Village President and Board of Trustees hereby authorize the Village
Manager to send a copy of this Resolution to all of the members of the Oakbrook Terrace City Council and
its Mayor.
Section 4. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage,
approval and publication as required by law.
