MINUTES OF THE
OAK BROOK LIBRARY COMIVIISSION
January 13, 1998
The meeting was called to order at 6 10 p in by Commissioner Roberta Petz
Present Commissioners Roberta Petz, and Anthony Ingrisano
Also Present George T Caleel, Library Liaison Trustee, Library Director Ruth Martin,
and Susan Esposito, meeting secretary
Excused Commissioner Barbara Benezra
The Minutes of the November 11, 1997 meeting were approved as submitted
Old Business
New Library Update: Director Martin reported that the appeal has been switched
to the Second Appellate District Court On January 20, 1998, the Village of Oak
Brook must file the brief On March 17, the Village of Oak Brook may respond to
the defendant's brief
Foundation Update Director Martin stated that the final draft for the by -laws
should be mailed by January 16. By January 30, Martin anticipates approval of the
draft by the Foundation Committee The by -laws will then be filed by the end of
February Once incorporated, the Foundation may begin its fund- raising efforts
Friends of the Library: Commissioner Ingrisano reported that the next Evergreen
Concert is scheduled for April 19, 1998 The concert will be held at the Bath &
Tennis club and feature Irish music Joe Fullan will also be honored for his years of
service to the community
There will be a book sale on April 24 and 25 This book sale enables the Library to
recycle its discarded materials back into the community Commissioner Petz

reported that the Friends will be using plastic bags to wrap purchases and any bag
remainders will be donated to the Oak Brook Public Library for their use
New Business
Grant Application: Director Martin reported that with the lifting of the need to
qualify for the per Captia restriction as a pre- requisite to other state grants, some
grants have become available to the Library. The Oak Brook Library will apply for
the Library Services and Technical Advancement Grant The program "Searching
for Seniors" will require funding of $60- 70,000
Serving Our Public (SOP) Chapter 5, Reference, Reader's Advisory, and
Bibliographic Instruction, was reviewed and discussed Some of the topics raised
included disaster recovery for materials, communication efforts for the deaf,
receiving school board minutes for public use, and reference materials Martin will
discuss adding TTD to the public phone with Mike Crotty
President's Report: Commissioner Petz reported on the positive press the new library
has been receiving in the local press
Director's Report: Director Martin briefly reported on an article featuring an OBPL
staff member and distributed copies of Illinois Library Laws and Serving Our Public to
the Commission
The meeting adjourned at 7 05 p in
