MEETING CALL:
The Oak Brook Library Commission meeting of Tuesday, January 18, 2000 was called to order
by Chairperson Roberta Petz in the Upper Level Conference Room of the Village Commons at
7:43 p.m.
PRESENT: Commissioners Roberta Petz, Randa Bishlawi, and Anthony J. Ingrisano.
IN ATTENDANCE: Adam Butler, Library Liaison Trustee, Ruth A. Martin, Library Director,
and Michelle M. Coduto, meeting secretary.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes of the November 16, 1999 meeting were approved as submitted.
3. ADDITIONS TO THE AGENDA:
None.
4. OLD BUSINESS:
A. LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT:
Director Martin announced that the Foundation has raised approximately $260,000 for
the new building project and that still more money is expected to be raised to meet the
commitment made by the Foundation.
B. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT:
Commissioner Ingrisano stated that the Friends of the Library decorated the Library
for the holidays and removed the decorations after the new year. Director Martin
expressed the appreciation of the Library staff.
C. LIBRARY PROJECT REPORT:
Director Martin reported that final drawings for the new library building from Carow
Architects Planners are delayed, but are due on February 1, 2000. If this date is met,
bids could be sought after the February 22, 2000 Village Board meeting. The
drawings that were reported as final in November were incomplete and not able to be
sent for bid.
D. RESOLUTION HONORING BARBARA D. BENEZRA:
All members of the Commission approved resolution 2000 -1, honoring Barbara D.
Benezra.

5. NEW BUSINESS
A. UPDATE THE COMMISSION NOTEBOOKS:
Commission notebooks were updated to reflect recent changes.
B. POLICY FORMAT:
Director Martin distributed examples of website policy formats, which was followed
by a discussion of new ideas for the Library policies. Commissioner Bishlawi
discussed her trip to the Elmhurst Public Library, in which she and Martin tested the
Cyber Patrol filters on the Children's computer terminals.
D. OUTREACH:
Commissioner Bishlawi presented ideas to reach local schools and preschools for
Library programming, some of which are already in place and others which will be
reviewed.
E. SERVING OUR PUBLIC. CHAPTER FIVE:
Director Martin discussed Chapter Five, Reference, Reader's Advisory, and
Bibliographic Instruction, for which all core and supplemental standards have been
met, though a recovery plan that is specific to the Library is desired.
6. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT:
Commissioner Petz opened the floor and Commissioner Bishlawi suggested a special meeting
of the Library Commission to discuss the Commissioners' duties. The meeting was set for
February 28, 2000. Commissioner Petz will circulate a draft of duties for discussion at the
meeting.
7. DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Director Martin announced the Library's 1999 statistics and the beginning of the Library's
new adult winter reading program, Blizzard of Books.
8. ADJOURNMENT:
The meeting was adjourned at 9:41 p.m. by Chairperson Petz.
