A. LIBRARY LANDSCAPING:
Paul Wiese and Ben Kutscheid of JJR/Smith Group made a presentation
summarizing critical issues for the Oak Brook Public Library landscape plan
and offered three prospective visions using slides and boards.
The landscapers' concerns for the Library included:
• Improve the entry experience;
• Provide shade for the library;
• Evaluate bike racks;
• Add more color and /or screening for the Friend's Garden;
• Increase separation from the soccer fields and improve cohesiveness by
limiting the variety of plants;
• Preserve the Children's Garden;
• Screen views to service and utilities;
• Increase trees and shrubs on berms;
• Remove buckthorn from the woods.
Commissioner Duff expressed a safety concern where overgrowth blocks views
of the path. Director Klinkow stated that the Village wants the utilities
screened before any thinning on 31" Street.
The landscapers presented three alternate themes for consideration, explained
them and asked for opinions:

"The Four Seasons" and four directions offer different qualities of light
and temperature and so different plants are appropriate and gardens will
include educational signage.
"The Garden Walk" encircles the building with a walkway and
encourages one to explore a variety of gardens.
The "Greening of the Library" strives for a sustainable design using
native plants and improving the handling of storm water; may include
partial "green" roof and prairie plants.
There was a general discussion of the proposals, acknowledging that ideas from
the three themes may be combined. The Commissioners and members of the
public gave their opinions on plants, features, and designs to the landscape
designers. JJR will review these and present specific plan options at the
February 16, 2006 meeting. At this next meeting the public is encouraged to
present written comments, but the discussion and direction to the designers will
be limited to Commissioners.
