May 13, 1997
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Commissioner Roberta
Petz.
Present: Commissioners Roberta Petz, Barbara Benezra and Anthony
Ingrisano
Also Present: Library Director Ruth Martin, Trustee George Caleel
Doings Newspaper Reporter Kate Harrigan
Kate Harrigan announced that she was being transferred from Oak Brook
and will now cover Willowbrook for The Doings.
George Caleel was welcomed as the new library liaison trustee. Roberta
Petz explained the governance of the library and noted that it is now
illegal to organize another library in the State with a commission. The
commission makes recommendations to the Village Board through the
liaison trustee. The commission usually meets bi- monthly but is free to
meet more often. It is expected that the four years ahead will be
historic for Oak Brook because of the anticipated library construction.
The minutes of the March 11, 1997 meeting were approved as submitted.
Old Business
Status of Library Construction Project: Attorney Dick Martens has
answered the complaint filed by Constantine Xinos. Ruth Martin and
Roberta Petz are working with Attorney Martens to create a notebook
showing the recreational use of libraries. The 'status call before the
judge is set for July 15, 1997.
Facilities Committee Update: The purpose of this committee is to handle
a broad range of construction decisions which will be reported to the
Village Board but will allow timely action by the committee. It is
expected that the committee will consist of the Village President,
Commissioners, Liaison Trustee and the Library Director. The committee
formation has been postponed because of the construction delay.
New Business
Collection Management Policy: The policy will be reviewed in depth at
the July commission meeting.
Internet Access for the Public: Currently, only the library staff has
internet access. Most libraries do offer internet access to patrons.
The current Oak Brook library building has power problems and no space
for the computers. This project is on hold.

Serving Our Public: For standards, the Village Board has agreed to
define the Library as "established° while serving a population of 10,000
residents plus 2,000 commercial users.
Chapter IX, "Systems & ILLINET,u was reviewed. OBPL belongs to a
multiple library system and participates in research sharing. ILLINET
access is available to staff only at this time. The Director fulfills
member responsibilities by attending area meetings.
Director's Ra2ort: Ruth Martin reported that the software migration is
underway. All 13 terminals are now PC's. Loan periods will expand to 3
weeks for most materials. Videos will be loaned for 4 days, for a $1.00
fee each. Sign up for the summer reading program begins May 26, 1997.
"Discover oak Brook Public Library" bookmarks were distributed.
