OAK BROOK LIBRARY COMMISSION
JULY 12, 1994 '
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 P.M. by acting chair Bobbie Petz.
Present: Commissioners Bobbie Petz and Barbara Benezra and Trustee Gerald McInerney
Also Present: Librarian Ruth Martin
The minutes of the May 10, 1994 meeting were approved as corrected.
Old Business: The draft of Responsibilities of Library Commissioners was discussed. The Commission
receive a letter of acknowledgment from Village Manager Steve Veitch, but no further action has been
taken by the Village Board of Trustees or the Village Manager.
The draft of the General Policy for library operations was discussed with particular emphasis on courtesy
cards and service for non - residents and business people. Expanded referente service was discussed.
The possibility of using an answering machine to have people leave questions on was raised. Librarian
Martin commented that this would be more of a workload than the staff can handle. The lack of a reference
librarian on the staff makes this service offering impossible. Librarian Martin is trying to complete the
General Policy for presentation to the Village Board at the second July or first August meeting.
Upon board acceptance of the General Policy, the Commissioners and the Librarian will begin working on
the Collection Development Policy. Commissioner Petz requested that Martin obtain a copy of the Downers
Grove collection development policy as a model. Martin will contact Downers Grove Library Administration.
New Business:
Commissioners Petz and Benezra requested information regarding the vacancy on the commission. Village
President Bushy will be contacted regarding progress. It is the Commission's hope that this position is filled
prior to any focus group work or other community outreach regarding the question of a new library facility.
Former Commissioner Joe Fullan was recognized by The Doings in the "Deeds of Distinction" column for
his years of volunteer work in support of the library.
The Commissioners determined that the next meeting would be at 6:00 P.M. on September 12, 1994. The
meeting will be held in the Lower Level Conference Room.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:30.
Respectfully submitted,

Ruth A. Martin, Librarian
