MEETING CALL: • OAK BROOK LIBRARY COMMISSION Minutes September 21, 1999 UNOFFICIAL UNTIL APPROVED AS WRITTEN X OR AS AMENDED BY THE LIBRARY COMMISSION ON November 16, 1999 The Oak Brook Library Commission meeting of Tuesday, September 21, 1999 was called to order by President Roberta Petz in the Upper Level Conference Room of the Village Commons at 7:32 p.m. PRESENT: Commissioners Roberta Petz, Barbara D. Benezra, and Anthony J. Ingrisano. IN ATTENDANCE: Ruth A. Martin, Library Director, Michelle M. Coduto, meeting secretary, Stephen Stanis, reporter from The Doings, Susan Schwartz from the Oak Brook Civic Association. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the July 20, 1999 meeting were approved as submitted. 3. OLD BUSINESS: A. LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: Commissioner Benezra announced that the Foundation accepted the first $100,000 of the $500,000 donation from the McDonald's Corporation. McDonald's representative, Michael Donahue was elected to a directorial position on the Foundation. Benezra also announced that the Foundation had recently sent out a fundraising mailing and are planning another drive for the year's end. B. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Commissioner Ingrisano reported that the Friends provided the Library groundbreaking with cookies, apple cider and commemorative buttons. Ingrisano also announced that Barrington Brass is scheduled to perform at the Evergreen Concert on October 17, 1999 C. LIBRARY PROJECT REPORT: Director Martin reported that there were an estimated 110 attendees at the Library groundbreaking ceremony, including many large donors. Hard hats and shovels, which were passed around to all that wished to participate, were provided by Harbour Contractors, Inc. The Oak Brook Bath & Tennis Club provided the tent and Carow Architects Planners brought along the design model of the new building. Martin also announced that resident Nicholas Kitsos motioned to stop the groundbreaking. The motion was denied. Another hearing on the Kitsos lawsuit is scheduled for November 16, 1999. OAK BROOK LIBRARY COMMISSION 1 of 2 September 21, 1999 4. NEW BUSINESS A. SERVING OUR PUBLIC STANDARDS: Director Martin led the discussion of Chapters 3 and 7 on Personnel and Access, respectively. The Library, due to the age of the building, is not in compliance with several core standards. However, the new building will comply with current standards. 5. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Commissioner Petz discussed two newspaper articles dealing with censorship and libraries in the future. 6. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Martin announced that September is Library Card Sign -Up Month. Martin also reported on the Library's in- service day, Friday morning, August 13, 1999, which focused on customer service training. This year's annual Oak Brook Women's Club donation of the National Geographic DVD -ROM set was announced. 7. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 p.m. by President Petz.
