AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ARTICLE III OF CHAPTER 6 OF THE CODE
OF ORDINANCES OF THE VILLAGE OF OAK BROOK, ILLINOIS AND
ADOPTING A FIRE PREVENTION CODE, NATIONAL FIRE CODES
AND A LIFE SAFETY CODE
WHEREAS, the corporate authorities of the Village of
Oak Brook deem it to be in the interest of public health and safety
to adopt by reference the "Fire Prevention Code , 1976 Edition" and
the "Life Safety Code , 1976 Edition", which certain modifications
and to adopt by reference certain portions of those codes known as
the "National Fire Codes, 1979 Edition";
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE PRESIDENT AND
BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF OAK BROOK, DU PAGE AND COOK
COUNTIES, ILLINOIS, as follows :
Section 1: That Section 6-42 of the Code of Ordin-
ances of the Village of Oak Brook, Illinois be and is hereby amend-
ed to read as follows :
R'r Sec. 6-42. Codes Adopted By Reference.
There are hereby adopted for the purpose of prescrib-
ing regulations governing conditions hazardous to life and property
from fire or explosions , the following codes and standards to be
known as the Oak Brook Fire Prevention Code :
(1) The "FIRE PREVENTION CODE , 1976 Edition", recom-
mended by the American Insurance Association;
(2) The "LIFE SAFETY CODE, 1976 Edition" , published
by the National Fire Protection Association,
NFPA #101; and
(3) Volumes One through Five and Seven through Eleven,
with the exception of NFPA Numbers : 73, 1001 ,
1002, 1021, 1031, 1041 , 1501 , 1901 , 1921, 1931,
and 1971 of the "NATIONAL FIRE CODES, 1979 Edit-
ion", published by the National Fire Protection
Association.
° Section 2: That Section 6-43 of the Code of Ordinances
of the Village of Oak -Brook, Illinois be and is hereby amended to
read as follows :
Sec. 6-43. Amendments to Fire Prevention Code.
The Fire Prevention Code is amended and changed in the
following respects :
(1) The Fire Prevention Code , 1976 Edition, adopted
pursuant to Section 6-42 (1) hereof, is amended as
follows :
(a) Section 14 .4 , subsections a, b, c , d, and e
are deleted.
(b) The Fire Prevention Code , 1976 Edition is
amended by adding thereto Section 14 .4a,

entitled "Automatic Sprinkler Systems" ,
which Section shall read as follows :
Automatic sprinkler systems shall be in-
stalled and maintained in full operating
conditions in all parts of all buildings,
with the following exceptions :
(1) One story buildings under 1,000 square
feet, without basements .
(2) Single family dwellings .
(3) Existing buildings , provided such
buildings otherwise comply with the
requirements of Article 14 of this
Code for fire protection alarm equip-
ment and further provided that such
existing equipment complies with the
provisions of Section 1 . 2 of the Fire
Prevention Code.
(c) Section 14 .3 is amended by adding thereto the
following:
All fire protection equipment systems
shall be tested annually. This testing
is to be done by qualified personnel,
and documentation of all testing is to
be submitted to the Bureau of Fire Pre-
vention upon completion.
(d) The Fire Prevention Code, 1976 Edition is
amended by adding thereto Section 14 .6 , en-
titled "Fire Protection Equipment Supervision",
which Section shall read as follows :
All fire protection equipment shall be
supervised, and shall terminate with the
Village of Oak Brook Communications Cen-
ter, to insure immediate notification
of activation of this equipment.
Section 3: That Section 6-45 of the Code of Ordinances
of the Village of Oak Brook, Illinois be and is hereby amended to read
as follows :
Sec. 6-45 . Establishment of Limits of Districts In
Which Storage of Explosives and Blasting
Agents Is To Be Prohibited.
Limits referred to in Sect . 12 . 5b of the Fire Prevention
Code, 1976 Edition, in which storage of explosives , blasting agents
is prohibited are hereby established as the corporate limits of the
Village of Oak Brook, except by Special Permit, and only when applied
for and approved by the Bureau of Fire Prevention.
Section 4: That Section 6-46 of the Code of Ordinances
of the Village of Oak Brook, Illinois be and. is hereby amended to read
as follows :
Sec. 6-46 . Establishment of Limits of Districts
In Which Storage of Flammable Liquids
in Outside, Above Ground Tanks is to
be Prohibited.
(a) Limits referred to in Sect. 16 .22a of the
Fire Prevention Code in which the words
flammable liquids outside, above ground
limits of the Village of Oak Brook, except
by Special Permit when applied for and
approved by the Bureau of Fire Prevention.

(b) Limits referred to in Sect . 16 .61 of the
Fire Prevention Code in which bulk plants
for flammable or combustible liquids are
prohibited are hereby established as the
corporate limits of the Village of Oak
Brook, except by Special Permit when ap-
plied for and approved by the Bureau of
Fire Prevention
Section 5 : That Section 6-47 of the Code of Ordinances
of the Village of Oak Brook, Illinois be and is hereby amended to
read as follows :
Sec . 6-47 . Establishment of Limits In Which Storage
of Liquefied petroleum gas is to be
Restricted.
(a) Limits referred to in Sect. 21 .6a of the
Fire Prevention Code in which storage of
any quantity of liquefied petroleum gas
is restricted are hereby established as
the corporate limits of the Village of Oak
Brook except by Special Permit when approve-
ed by the Bureau of Fire Prevention.
Section 6: That Section 6-48 of the Code of Ordinances
of the Village of Oak Brook, Illinois be and is hereby amended to
read as follows :
Sec. 6-48 . Establishment of Motor Vehicle Routes
for Vehicles Transporting Explosives ,
Blasting Agents , Hazardous Chemicals
and other dangerous articles .
(a) The routes referred to in Sect. 12 . 7m of the
Fire Prevention Code for vehicles transporting
explosives or blasting agents are hereby
established as Illinois Route 5 (East-West
Tollway) , and Illinois Route 83, except that
other routes may be followed by Special Per-
mit when applied for and 'approved by the
Bureau of Fire Prevention.
Section 7 : That Section 6-50 of the Code of Ordinances
of the Village of Oak-Brook,. Illinois be and is hereby amended to
read as follows :
New materials, processes , or occupancies which may
require permits .
The Bureau of Fire Prevention shall determine and
specify, after. giving affected persons an opportunity
to be heard, any new materials, processes or occu-
pancies , which shall require permits , in addition to
those now enumerated in said Code .
Section 8 The adoption of this Ordinance shall not
be construed as preventing the enforcement of, or repealing the pro-
vision of any ordinance , regulation, standard or code , adopted by
the Village of Oak Brook which is more restrictive than the provi-
sions of this Ordinance . In the event that any provisions of this
Ordinance shall be in conflict with any ordinance , regulation, stan-
dard or code adopted by the Village of Oak Brook, the more restric-
tive shall be _applicable .
Section 9 : That not less than three (3) copies of
the codes are hereby adopted in Section 1 hereof, in book form, have
been filed in the office of the Village Clerk for use and examination
by the public at least thirty (30) days prior to the adoption of
this Ordinance, and not less than three (3) copies of said codes
are now filed in the office of the Village Clerk.

Section 10 : That this Ordinance shall be in full force
and effect from and after its adoption, approval and publication as
provided by law.
Section 11: The Village Clerk is hereby authorized and
directed to publish this Ordinance in pamphlet form as required by
law.
