MEMO TO: Steve McShane, Chairman, Safety Pathway Committee
FROM: Dale L. Durfey, Jr., P E.
SUBJECT: 22nd Street and Midwest Road Requests
Today I received a call from an employee from the Shops at Oak Brook Place who requested that
sidewalks be placed along 22nd Street and along Midwest Road. He specifically discussed the
pedestrian needs to and from the bus stop on 22 "d Viand to and from the restaurants on Midwest
Road.
I informed him that 22nd Street, east of Midwest Road, was outside the Village limits and gave
hxrn the phone cumbers of IDOT and DuFage County to voice his requests. I also told him that I
would pass his requests along to our Safety Pathway Committee for their review.
Concerning Midwest Road, I have requested of the DuPage County Division of Transportation
that they install sidewalks along those portions north of 22od Street that are receiving work >Il
connection with the I -88 bridge project. To date, I have not received a reply.
i
Also, the fast phase of sidewalk along Midwest Road should be built in 1999 as part of the
Butterfield/Midwest MOT project. Those plans call for sidewalk going south from Butterfield
about 500 feet on both sides.
As per the employee's request, please review his comments.

Subject: Harger Road and York Road Bridges
Dear Steve:
Z(►1,, (1 1q,
We understand that the village may not be able to reach the desired outcome in the negotiation
with the Tollway Authority regarding the Harger Road bridge over Salt Creek and the York Road
bridge over the Tollway. The committee has asked me to put our position on record, that these
elements of the pathway systems are absolutely essential to the unification of the pathway system
for the village. It becomes more apparent than ever with the completion of the York Road
pathway and the segment north of 22 "4 Street,
We are requesting that the village take whatever action is necessary to utilize the grant money to
complete these projects before the expiration of the grants
Thank you for your continuing support,
Sincerely,
Steve McShane

Dear Karen:
At our November meeting, the committee passed a resolution requesting that I approach the
village to recognize and thank you and the village board for your persistence in following
• through on the construction of the York Road pathway After many years of discussion and
work, we feel that the beautiful new pathway is a significant event and should be given the public
attention, since there has been attention over the years to the controversies s=oond -mg its
approval.
Combined with the other work that has been done along York Road it is a fulfillment of the
efforts of current and former committee members as well as many village officials. Along with
recent work done on the east side of York Road, on York Road north of 22" Street, and on 35`'
street between Trinity Lakes and Covington Court, good progress is being made toward the goal
of unifying the village with Safety Pathways.
Iri recognition, we feet that the village should consider issuing a press release honoring thus
milestone. In addition, we recommend that there be some kind of a opening ceremony, perhaps
in the Spring when landscaping is completed. Please let us know what your feelings are on thus
subject.
Best regards,

RE: Harger Road and York Road Bridges
Thank you for your letter of November 15, 1998 in which you request that the Village take whatever
action is necessary to utilize the grant money to complete these projects before the expiration of the
grant. I am pleased to inform you that the Village will be proceeding with these projects through our
• consultant and expect to accomplish the Phase I work (preliminary engineering and analysis) during the
first part of 1999.
As you know, this particular pathway is essential, not only for the Village of Oak Brook's pathway
system, but also for the Salt Creek Greenway system.
Thank you for taking the time to write and for your concern on behalf of the citizens of Oak Brook.

Subject: 31" Street Pathway crossing Route 83
Dear Steve-
The unification of the village through a Safety Pathway system depends on critical passageways,
and one of the most cntical is the passageway along 315` Street crossing Route 83
It is our understanding that the construction of the 319` Street pathway across Route 83, foz- which
grant money was available, was set aside because of an understanding that McDonald's would be
funding an expansion of the bridge, which would include a pathway.
Now we understand that the McDonald's project has been permanently delayed. In light of this
information, the committee has asked me to write to request that the village take what action is
necessary to utilize the grant money to complete this project before the expiration of the grant.
Please let me know what can be done to expedite this project Thank you for your continuing
support.
Sincerely,
Steve McShane
