L Stop By and See the Butterflies in the Library's Front
If you visit the Library in the next few weeks, you may be treated to the outstanding sight of various swallowtail butterflies in
our gardens. The Giant Swallowtail is our largest butterfly with a wingspan of 4-6 inches. There are usually two generations
of swallowtails per year and they feed on the nectar of milkweed, phlox, clover and liatris. The Black Swallowtail has also
been sighted frequently. While not quite as large or showy, it is still an awesome sight. Our favorite has been the Tiger
Swallowtail which is brightly colored. These butterflies are a treat to watch as they flutter gracefully from flower to flower.
The swallowtails are the only butterflies with long, tapering wings reminiscent of the swallow, hence, their name.
