Transform Your Life Through Meditation Saturday, June 3 @ 2 pm Join Michael Ribet, meditator and international speaker for over 40 years, for this engaging workshop. The Story of Smokey the War Dog Saturday, June 10 @ 2 pm From a lucky chance discovery at the bottom of an abandoned fox hole in Papua New Guinea during WWII, to becoming a famous entertainer, war hero and the world’s first official Therapy Dog of record, Smokey’s story is nothing short of amazing. The presentation is complete with vintage photos, videos, posters, and even a valuable statue of Smokey lent by famous sculptor Susan Bahary. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Hot N Cole: The Music of Cole Porter Saturday, June 17 @ 2 pm Featuring music from one of America's most beloved jazz/theatre composers, Porter's witty, engrossing and unique style has captivated listeners for decades! Matt and Cynthia Gruel will also enlighten listeners with background information that will bring greater appreciation for Porter's genius. We provide children ages three and up with the opportunity to earn prizes for reading during the summer. Be sure to sign up and pick up your reading log! We hope to have all of Oak Brook’s children Reading by Design this summer! Adults Gear up for Reading by Design! Stop in at the Library starting June 3 to pick up your summer reading log, plus a small prize just for participating! The program is open to participants 14 and older. Read or listen to five books from OBPL’s collection before August 5 and get entered in the grand prize drawing sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Shredding Event The LN Group and RE/MAX Enterprises are hosting a shredding event at the Library on Saturday, June 17 @ 10 am - 12 pm in the Library’s parking lot. Friends Membership Drive The Friends of the Library will be sending out membership renewal letters in June. Please support your Library by joining or renewing your membership. Thank you! Books & Bites Book Discussion Thursday, June 29 @ 4 pm - Wonder We will meet once per month to discuss a good book while discovering fun facts about it and the author. Snacks will be provided! See the Circulation Desk for a copy of the book a few weeks before each session. Recommended for grades 4 & up. Mathnasium Presents: Math That Makes Art Wednesday, June 14 @ 10:30 am - 12 pm Mathnasium of Oak Brook will have participants examining basic object patterns, basic number patterns and symmetry. Everyone will leave with a piece of art they created based upon the topics covered. Registration Required. Entering Grades 2-5. Lego® Robotics Workshop Monday, June 19 @ 10-11 am Sylvan Learning Center will guide participants in building and programming robots —all while developing new skills and having a blast with STEM. At the end of the program each child will receive a report and photo of their creation. Registration required. Space is very limited! Entering Grades 1-5. Mathnasium presents: Patterns, Tessellations, and Math That Makes Art Wednesday, June 21 @ 10:30 am -12 pm Mathnasium of Oak Brook will have participants examining non-arithmetic number patterns, symmetry, and tessellations. Everyone will leave with a piece of art they created based upon the topics covered. Registration required. Entering Grades 6-8. Monday Evening Chess Club June 12, 19 and 26 @ 6:30-8 pm This club is open to players grades K-12 who already have an understanding of the game. It is a club, not a team, so players are welcome to join us to improve their game and play. Registration required. Coding for Kids Monday, June 26 @ 10-11 am Sylvan Learning Center will give participants an introduction to computer coding and video game design. Students build valuable skills and early confidence in computer programming as they bring their imaginations to life! Registration required. Space is very limited! Entering Grades 3-6. Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary Friday, June 9 @ 2 pm Science comes “alive” with this interactive exotic wildlife program which provides unique encounters with animals from around the world. Discussion will cover the important role these animals play in the world, conservation, and the importance of preservation. Sponsored by Friends of the Library. Registration required. Saturday Stars Storytime Saturday, June 17 @ 11 am Families are welcome to this fun-filled storytime. Stories and activities will be geared towards ages 2-6. Young Artists Workshop Friday, June 16 @ 2-3:30 pm Artist Terry Murphy is back to teach young artists how to create a work of pop art! They will look at artist Roy Lichtenstein’s work and learn about the typography and elements of design that contribute to the Manga look. Registration required. Ages 8-13. June Storytimes Registration is required for all storytimes Toddling 2s & 3s Thursdays, Jun. 8, 15, 22 & 29 @ 10:30 am This is a perfect program to introduce little ones to the library. We’ll enjoy some good books, sing songs, dance, do fingerplays and more! We’ll also make crafts which are related to the theme of the day. A parent or caregiver must stay with children during the program. Grades K-2 Storytime/Art Tuesdays, Jun. 6, 13, 20 & 27 @ 4 pm Join us for some summertime stories that will awaken our creative juices. Because Miss Brigitte believes that good books inspire us, a story-inspired art project will follow. Please dress for mess!
