MEM "THE REALIZATION OF A VISION." . By Juanita Swatos The grand opening of the new Oak Brook Library building was held on Saturday, March 9, 2002, and, in spite of the inclement weather, was attended by approximately 700 people. The opening included an all-day program of activities from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 10:30 A.M., with Karen M. Bushy, Village President, having the honor of cutting the ribbon, followed by refreshments served in the Meeting Room. The new Library building is designed in a unique curvilinear manner by architect Jay Carow. From an aerial view, the building appears to be shaped like a six-petaled flower. Upon entering the foyer, there is a very enchanting sculpture of Ronald McDonald holding a young boy and a sculpture of a little girl. The statues, sculpted by Mr. Dee Clements, are done in bronze, with the girl's dress tinted teal blue and the boy's jeans tinted blue with a pale blue sweatshirt. The sculpture was donated by the McDonald's Corporation, in addition to making a generous donation of $500,000 to the Library project. As you enter the Library, your eyes are immediately drawn to a large dome with a skylight located in the center of the room. There is a very inviting seating area directly beneath the dome and is a major attraction and focal point to everyone entering the room. Just inside the door to the right is the circulation desk, where you can ask questions and check out books. Directly across the room to the left is another piece of artwork called "The Donor Tree." Donations of $500,000 or more are recognized on the tree, and donor levels are designated by the color of the leaves. The floor-to-ceiling windows let in the daylight and give the feeling of being outdoors. There are comfortable seating arrangements by the windows, as well as, other inviting reading and study areas throughout the Library. The lighting is very soft and creates a feeling of peace and serenity. There is a Public Computer Room with 10 computer workstations and a Youth Computer Room with three more workstations. There are also five public access computers throughout the collection areas for accessing the Library catalog. There is also a wonderful Youth Activity Room and a Youth Computer Area. Another lovely attraction is an outside garden, where young children can try their hands at gardening under the supervision of three staffers. The Library also has a Meeting Room which accommodates up to 120 people and is available upon application approval and reservation. Study rooms for work groups and small meetings are also available. There are volunteer opportunities for people interested in community service, and there are many diverse options from which to choose. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to stop by the Library and fill out a volunteer form. So, dust off your library card and visit this great new addition to the Village of Oak Brook. If you don't have a library card, the staff of the Library will be glad to assist you. This "magical" card will open the door to new and interesting things. And remember, as quoted by Malcolm Forbes: "ALL THE RICHES IN THE WORLD COULDN'T PROVIDE YOU WITH ANYTHING LIKE THE ENDLESS, INCREDIBLE LOOT AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY." Foregone Conclusion • The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. • On the other hand, the French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. • The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. • Conclusion: Eat and drink what your like. It's speaking English that kills you.
