This year's calendar feature, the Oak Brook Public Library, was
selected by the Oak Brook Civic Association Board.
The Oak Brook Library has been a part of our history almost
since the beginning of the Village of Oak Brook. The Civic r
Association appointed a Library Feasibility Committee in 1960 and = '- . - -.
sponsored a"blue ballot referendum"in May,1961 that indicated
citizen preference for the establishment of a library. The fledgling
library, operated by the Oak Brook Library Association, opened its
doors on May 16, 1965. The Library was housed in one room of "' '
Village Hall which was located in the old Butler School. In 1971,the 1 - I '
ibrary Association turned over ownership and operation of the }.
Library to the Village. When the new Village Hall was opened in -- . i
975,the Library began using the entire old Butler School building "1 , ;

providing a feeling of openness and privacy at the same time. Quiet - R
study rooms are available for an individual or small groups of up to
six. The central dome is the architectural highlight of the building sem, .
bringing natural light to the center of the building throughout
daylight hours. Large and growing collections of films, music and
•ooks on tape and compact disc make this area a busy focal point.
he Youth Activity Room and attached garden offer staff the oppor-
tunity to provide exciting, recreational and educational support
programs for the children of our Village. A large meeting room is
available for a wide variety of Library programming and public
meetings of local interest.
Now that the Library is more spacious, the collections and com-
puter resources are expanding. We encourage everyone to visit and
enjoy the offerings of our Oak Brook Public Library.
