CALL TO ORDER
The Meeting of the Sports Core Advisory Committee of the Village of Oak Brook was held in the
Upper Level Conference Room at the Butler Government Center and called to order by Village
President Gopal Lalmalani at 7:00 p.m.
PRESENT: Angie Lopez, John Anos, Lara Barber, Erin Converse, Kathy Miller, Frank
Scarpiniti, Lynna Smith, Mike Stevens
ABSENT: Melissa Martin
IN ATTENDANCE: Village Manager Rick Ginex, Village President Gopal Lalmalani, Village
Trustee Mike Manzo, Executive Assistant Donna Bettin, Golf Club Manager Sean
Creed
INTRODUCTIONS BY GOPAL LALMALANI - Village President Lalmalani thanked everyone for
their willingness to serve on this Committee and explained that he is looking forward to hearing the
advice the Committee offers for improvements to the Sports Core and future recommendations. He
explained the reasoning behind forming this Committee and requested that the Committee members
introduce themselves and explain their experience with the Sports Core and/or Village role.
GUIDELINES" RULES FOR OUR COMMITTEE - Village President Lalmalani communicated to
the Committee that he was disappointed to not see golf on the agenda, but he does want to hold some
discussion the golf course at this meeting. No action will be taken. He reviewed the Ordinance that
was recently approved by the Village Board that included the Committee's charge. He then turned the
meeting over to Committee Chair, Angie Lopez.
Chairwomen Lopez thanked President Lalmalani and allowed for public comment.
Resident Bill Lindeman had a couple of questions for the Committee and staff present.
Resident Don Adler stated that he is happy to see this Committee formed and shared the fundamental
process the Committee will go through as well as historical and budget information from his
perspective as a former Village Trustee.
DIRECTION OF POOL MANAGEMENT FOR 2018 SEASON - Chairwomen Lopez explained that
she reached out to Executive Director Laure Kosey at the Park District to discuss the consideration of
submitting a proposal to run pool operations for the Village moving forward. A meeting is scheduled
with Ms. Kosey for Monday, December 1 lth, just prior to the Park Board meeting. Lara Barber and
Melissa Martin will meet with Ms. Kosey and then speak at the Park Board meeting. Discussion
ensued. ChairwomenLopez asked the Committee if she could have a consensus in having Ms. Barber
and Ms. Martin represent the Committee at both of these meetings. All members present verbally
agreed.
Additional options: Manager Ginex explained an option utilizing private companies for the pool
management services. The proposals included in the agenda packet were reviewed. Another option is
to have the Village hire their own staff to run pool operations. Discussion ensued.

a. Hiring Aquatic Director - currently feelers are out for this position.
b. Pool Maintenance Service and Contract - Manager Ginex explained that the pool
maintenance should be considered in all discussions for proposals. This includes, pool
opening/closing, and daily items required by Department of Health. Public Works has
placed a full-time employee and seasonal employee in the budget primarily for assisting
with Bath & Tennis Club maintenance operations for 2018. He also listed a few repair
projects in the budget for 2018. Manager Ginex explained some possible changes to the
caf6. Discussion ensued.
c. Swim Coaches and Swim Program Improvements - Lara Barber briefly explained the
swim team program and Coaches from the previous year and what is being considered for
the summer swim program and swim team in 2018.
BROCHURE AND PRICING - As of this meeting, membership pricing and programs cannot be set
until pool and tennis operations are confirmed. Discussion ensued. To get the brochure out in a
timely fashion, all information should be in place by Feb. 1't.
DIRECTION OF TENNIS PROGRAM FOR 2018 SEASON
a. Hiring a Tennis Pro - Manager Ginex explained that he received a name of a Tennis Pro
from Chairman Lopez to assist with the Tennis programing. Discussion was held
regarding outsourcing the Tennis rather than doing it in-house. Mike Stevens explained
that you want to have a Pro who can drive people to the tennis programs. Discussion
ensued.
Sean Creed explained the upcoming changes/improvements that will be made at the golf course,
provided the budget is approved. He also explained that the Golf Course will be taking over the
management of the concessions area at the pool.
Discussion ensued regarding the 40-year-old outdated facilities and lack of attention. The Board
should have long term plans to update, maintain and renew the Sports Core facilities as incentives to
drive memberships. Trustee Liaison Manzo, speaking as a Board member, explained that the Board
needs to look at the bigger picture and when it comes to Village expenditures. When the Village loses
money at the B & T, that money comes from the general fund. Those funds get taken away from
things like road paving, Police, Fire and fixing infrastructure. The B & T and golf facilities should be
nice and updated, but the priorities are Police, Fire and public infrastructure. Discussion ensued.
