3. The first item of discussion was an update from Bonnie regarding the Village Board's commitment to
Community Events. She stated that while the Independence Day celebration was still being debated, the
Autumn Festival would continue as before, with the Board continuing to put $20,000.00 in the budget for the
event. The Village Board has also indicated it will look to the Hotel/Motel Committee for a contribution.
Bonnie suggested the Autumn Fest committee delay discussion of a sponsorship solicitation letter until after
the Board has given some indication of monies that might become available. This year's Autumn Festival will
be held on Sunday, October 5.
4. The committee was asked for some feedback on the previous year's activities. Following discussion, it was
decided to eliminate the Pet Parade. The committee felt that there was insufficient interest in the activity and
that it is hard to organize. Bonnie suggested that the committee replace the parade with a K -9 demonstration
as an item of interest to animal lovers. Ralph noted that the Kite Flying exhibition would not be held this year
as the gentleman who had previously flown the kites was no longer doing it. Ralph also suggested that the
West Suburban Band perform two shorter programs rather than one long one and that a better sound system be
implemented for the raffle. The Farmer's Market vendor had been invited in 2002, but had cancelled at the
last minute. It was agreed that she be invited back again because several guests had asked about it. The
Farmer's Market is a very colorful addition and adds to the festival atmosphere. The committee expressed
interest in inviting all the other groups with the suggestion that the magician be scheduled earlier in the day if
possible. Letters will be sent to all asking them to "save the date ". While none of the committee- members had
an indication of the Arts and Crafts Vendors success, it was agreed that letters be sent to them to also to see if
there was an interest in retuming.
New event suiZQestions included the possibility of having someone from Great Lakes or one of the local
ROTC groups to attend and present a demonstration of some sort — particularly in light of the world events.
Connie said she would investigate that possibility. Joyce told the members about an outstanding reptile
exhibit she had seen and will bring more information to the group to consider adding it to the day's events if
there is interest by the committee members. Carolyn suggested we contact George Mueller at the Civic
Association for other suggestions and names of some of the vendors he uses for the Winter Carnival so prices
could be compared.
6. Preview Partv: Bonnie noted that the Private Bank has agreed to again underwrite the cost of the Elmhurst
College Band. Several committee members felt the band was too loud. It was too difficult to talk to one
another. Bonnie suggested placing the band in a different location this year. Hairy mentioned using a group
from York High School. Bonnie will call and inquire about the groups that are available. Perhaps some of the
musicians from York would be able to perform on Sunday afternoon rather than at the Preview Parry since the
Bank has already agreed to underwrite the College Band. Bonnie will also investigate the possibility of some
Bavarian musicians. The cost for the Preview Party will be $25.00 per person.
7. Parking was a topic of much discussion. Some felt the parking fee should be eliminated. Others felt it should
be continued — it will continue at $5.00 per car. The suggestion was made to use Scouts to collect parking fees
rather than hiring a parking service. Harry will contact someone in scouts about this possibility.
S. Next meeting: May 8, 2003
