Minutes - 05/20/1993 - Bath & Tennis Members' Committee• MINUTES OF THE OAK BROOK BATH & TENNIS COMMITTEE
MEETING HELD May 20th, 1993
The meeting -was called to order at 9:45 am with the minutes
of the previous meeting approved as submitted. Absent was
Ellie Dunteman. Present for this meeting was Tom Wangelin,
Tennis Director.
Member Communications:
A. Letter received from a Recreational Member (see
attached) re: tennis surcharge
B. Second letter (from member KLUETSCH) also objecting
to surcharge based on:
1. Why only tennis paying surcharge?
2. Why such a discriminatory policy?
3. It's "DUMB!"
4. Inefficient
Committee thoughts: As members, we can have more ef-
fect on changing this policy than individuals who de-
cide not to join ... also, surcharge IS going directly
to benefit tennis solely and surcharge is only (by
Village ordinance) one year policy. We do not see/
nor recommend its being re- instated next year.
• C. Non - resident recreational members object to higher
guest rates than residents pay for guests.
Social Events:
A. Kick -off season opening event is next week
B. Many members recall, fondly, the old Saddle Club's
atmosphere of burgers, coziness, "horsey- ness ",
dimly lit atmosphere, hay bales, etc. Possibly
could we ask Joe for one Friday night (after the
regular Friday night dinners are finished) say
8:00 pm (mid June). Pam and Joyce and Carol to
look into menu, music, paraphernalia (saddles,
hay bales, etc) and to shoot for June 18th or
25th as first possible dates ... if successful
will continue on regular basis.
C. Beach party was successful last year ... to do
again?
Swim:
A. Team sign -up night went well. Shirts on hand to
those who signed up. Team suits ordered also that
night. Coaches on hand, as well as desk attendant
(Amy A) and one guard (PJ H) and Tom Wangelin.
B. New AWNING for entrance to pool /pool desk sign -in
area arrived as we met today. Looks GREAT! Hope
other awning is in soon.
...q C. Sandblasted diving platforms, holes have been set

C. (continued)for starting platforms for swim meets...
no new tiles, paint for diving well nor baby pool,
(bids still out on these).
Hut: Pam to check with Joe on progress there.
Foods:
A. Excellent frozen fruit bars chosen, but juice choice
still not made (Minute Maid 100% juice not an option
since it is a Coca Cola product and Sports Core has
contract with Pepsi only): Perhaps just have bot-
tled juice behind counter and dispense individually
into cups since alternatives are large servings or
are less economically feasible.
B. New iced tea this year - A BIG IMPROVEMENT over last
Tennis:
A. Spring Jr. Tennis sign -up: Parents asked to pay
entire bill up -front before lessons /etc could start
B. Conference this year is HERE, Friday July 30th (the
day before Swim Conference hosted HERE, Saturday
July 31st.
Grounds:
A. Pond needs raking ... are chemicals to be used this
year?
B. Grass around tennis fences needs weed - whacking.
C. Door to clubhouse from circle has large piece of
weatherstripping sticking out, catches on ankles.
Joe and Tom shown this and they said they'd take
care of it.
D. Pool lounge chairs (old ones for repair ?) being
delivered as we met, also.
E. Contracts still out on baby pool retiling, paint.
July 3rd:
A. Committee remembers last year's mess with members
not having access to grounds via 31st Street: OB
Police detoured traffic @ Jorie & 31st so members
had to park elsewhere and walk. Encourage this
year's members to come early /make reservations
early.
B. Concern that with Hinsdale joining in fireworks
observance, traffic will be even bigger mess/
danger to residents of York Woods with cars
parked solid down their streets. Exit from
Butler school lots was mass confusion last year.
Hope Village will address these concerns.

Sports Core / Librar y future:
A. One newspaper (Herald) contacted Starr regarding
committee's stance on "the possible relocating of
Library onto site of clubhouse" and whether the
committee has any goals for change at B &T !!!
Starr responded that there were no burning issues
and that committee is concerned merely with "stay-
ing the course" and maintaining the nature of the
B &T as it is.
B. Space planners /etc discussed. Use of other library
facilities in area discussed.
Calendar: Starr working on one to list all programs now on
schedule ... any other ideas, let her know.
Next meeting was discussed: June 16th (Wednesday) at 7 pm

moved and seconded to adjourn at 11:20 am.

Dear Mr. Long:
I'm in'% receipt of your communications dated April 23, 1993. I
noted there is a dollar per day surcharge for open play. It will
be more convenient if you increase the membership fee by $50 - $60.
The cost of enforcing this $1 surcharge will probably be more.
This is an ingenious idea, like the monthly payment of the dues and
it will increase paper work and bureaucratic entrapments.
Let's hope saner heads prevail and a reasonable and workable
alternative is found, because I know some accountant or actuary who
came up with this idea is an eccentric genius. In theory this idea
is great, but in practice it is dumb and unworkable.
Yours Sincerely,
Krishan C. Nagpal, M. D.
