Minutes - 06/22/2006 - Board of TrusteesMINUTES OF THE JUNE 22, 2006 SPECIAL MEETING OF THE
PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF
OAK BROOK APPROVED AS WRITTEN ON AUGUST 8, 2006.
The Hitchcock Design Group presented the refined Alternative Beautification Concepts of
the Conceptual Beautification Master Plan at the Public Open House held at the Oak
Brook Bath & Tennis Clubhouse, 800 Oak Brook Road, Oak Brook, IL. The presentation
began at 5:45 p.m. In attendance were Trustees Jeffrey Kennedy, Kathryn Manofsky and
Robert Sanford; Streetscape Beautification Steering Committee Members and Village of
Oak Brook residents.
Tim King, Hitchcock Design Group, presented to the audience the project process and
residents responded to the site analysis noting areas that they would like to have
improved- 31" Street and Spring Road the southwest corner needs landscaping
enhancements, connecting the bike path on the southeast corner along York Road,
sidewalk needed along York Road near the southwest end of the school property and
addressing the underpass on York Road.
The beautification areas also being considered include around the Village Hall and the
public right -of -ways, medians, bus stops, swales, guard rails and retaining walls.
Streetscapes are being proposed along main collector type roadways, subdivision or gated
communities and a naturalized random placement of plant materials along 31 st Street. The
commercial streetscape environment could include ornamental type treatments which
require a higher level of maintenance.
Mr. King indicated that they met last month with the homeowner association presidents to
request their input on the proposed project. There was a general discussion of who would
participate and what concepts would be placed on public property. Their strategy will be
to discuss the possibility of partnering with corporations along 22nd Street to enhance the
area
Residents responded to the concept plan and requested to keep the concept of "country" in
the beautification of Oak Brook and they liked the idea of gateway signage. Residents
responded to the naturalized concept for medians and the planting of additional trees.
Regarding the commercial street prototype concept, residents responded that it would
bring visual interest that would enhance the experience of driving through Oak Brook.
Some suggested that it be a natural treatment while others recommended the ornamental
plantings and raised planters would add interest to the community. They also
recommended improved lighting at the interchanges.
Residents responded well to the concept of bridge enhancements and some asked if the
utility cables could be buried on 35th Street in Oak Brook. The residents indicated that
elements are needed that would give the Village a unique character.
