Illinois Watercolor Society Meeting and Demonstration Saturday, June 2, 2018 @ 10 am Featured artist Eileen Mueller Neill has been illustrating and designing for publishers and ad agencies over forty years. When not working on commercial assignments, Eileen enjoys expressing her own ideas in watercolor and other media. Giacomo Puccini: His Life and Opera Saturday, June 9 @ 2 pm Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was one of the greatest Italian romantic opera and verismo style composers. Join us as Young Kim examines his life, and features arias from his most renowned works, including La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot; all of which are among the important repertories performed around the world. Sentimental Journey Concert with Nora Drysch Saturday, June 16, 2018 @ 2 pm Vocalist Nora Drysch returns with an all-new lineup of beloved standards from the 30s to the early 60s, showcasing various artists, tempos, and languages. Her Hamilton: As Told by His Wife, Eliza Saturday, June 23, 2018 @ 2 pm Lynn Rymarz presents the story of one of the Founding Fathers of our nation from his wife, Eliza’s point of view. She will tell of his early beginnings in the West Indies, and the road that took him to America. Discover the role Hamilton played in the Revolutionary War, and the part he played in the new America. Reading Takes You Everywhere begins June 4 and runs through August 4 and is open to adults and young adults ages 14 and older. The Library is hosting its own version of The Great American Read. This national program sponsored by PBS, features an 8-part series and offers the opportunity to vote for America’s most-loved novel from a list of 100 titles. (Checkout a title from that list of 100 to enter on your summer reading log!) Your vote will help us determine OBPL’s most-loved novel. In October, the library will announce the winning title and all voters will be entered into a drawing for a prize; one for adults and one for ages under 18! Puzzles, and more puzzles! The puzzles in the Reference Department are a huge hit! Thanks to everyone who helped complete the 1000-piece Castle puzzle. Our new challenge was kindly donated to us by Patrice Macken, and is titled “Peaks, Plateaus & Canyons of the Grand Circle.” Stop by and have a go at fitting a piece of our new 500-piece puzzle. Dog Days of Summer - July 9-13 The Library is excited to present the Dog Days of Summer, which will include a Pet Food for Fines program, a K-9 Demonstration with Oak Brook Police Officer Andrew Franczak and Becks, a doggie ice cream social and more. Full details will be announced soon. We will also be hosting a Dog Beauty Contest. If you are interested, submit a photo of your pooch to - obpldogdays@gmail.com. The photos will be posted in the Library and voting will take place during the week long event. Books & Bites Book Discussion Thursday, June 28 @ 4 pm Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer We meet each month to discuss a good book while discovering fun facts about it and the author. Todd Downing Music Show: Tall Tales & Silly Songs Thursday, June 21 @ 10:30 am Singer, songwriter and comedian, Todd Downing has been entertaining and educating kids for many years. June Storytimes Toddling 2s-3s Thursdays, June 7 and 28 @ 10:30 am This is a perfect program to introduce little ones to the library. We’ll enjoy some good books, sing songs, dance, do fingerplays, and more! We’ll also make crafts which are related to the theme of the day. A parent or caregiver must stay with children during the program. *No sessions on June 14, and 21. Registration required. Aboriginal Dot Painting Friday, June 22 @ 2 pm This workshop will have the children traveling to Australia and features Aboriginal Dream Dot Art. Indigenous tribal Australians believe the world was dreamed into existence and handed down their creation stories through dot paintings. Young artists will dream their own images onto black paper with a variety of painted dots. Dress for mess! Ages 8-13. Registration is required. Space is limited!
