Check out the OBPL staff picks blog at oakbrooklibrarypicks.wordpress.com Database Highlight Downloadable Books You can use your Oak Brook Public Library card to check out physical books from almost any public library in Illinois, but the same is not true of electronic items. Providers such as OverDrive, Recorded Books and Axis360 charge libraries based on their population, so libraries have to restrict electronic access to only their own patrons. OBPL is part of a consortium for OverDrive’s eMediaLibrary, so our patrons have access to many more electronic books than we could purchase on our own. The consortium purchases books for all the member libraries and the OBPL purchases titles for only our card holders. We purchase titles based on several criteria, the amount of holds our patrons have placed, the cost, the position our patron is on the hold queue and recommendations that are made at the Library’s Reference Desk. Electronic titles cost more than their print version and not all are available for libraries to purchase. For more information or for help downloading a book, please stop by the Reference Desk.
