CALL TO ORDER
The Zoom Special Meeting of the Convention and Visitors Committee was called to order by Norm Canfield at
10:07 am.

PRESENT: Norm Canfield, David Carlin, Kathy Dwyer, Tim Geiges, Mort Kouklan, Lee Hoener, Dick Turner

NEW BUSINESS
A. Discussion regarding May 26, 2020 Village Board Meeting
Norm Canfield gave a recap of the Village Board meeting that Norm, Beth and Rob attended
in response to Trustee Tiesenga's concerns regarding money being spent on marketing when
hotels and other tourism establishments are not open. Rob Grusin gave a convincing portraya
of how money is being spent and saved and the necessity of staying relevant. The Board
unanimously approved the revised marketing plan.
B. Point B
Marketing plan, including cost from July 1St to end of year. Rob goes through the revised
marketing plan, and how they are moving forward amid COVID-19. He does a recap of the
money being saved from advertising that has been deferred or cancelled. And the shift in
where their focus will be in the coming months. Alexis, from Kinship begins with voicing
her desire to do site visits and the trend toward regional travel and staycations. Rob Grusin,
from Point B takes over and reiterates the two reopening scenarios that were presented to the
Board of Trustees. He speaks of the shift in travel to local destinations with a shorter
duration. He touches upon weddings and group business. And moves onto the reduction in
their marketing budget and where the cuts are taking place. He presented the shift in
marketing from expensive, less flexible radio ads to more reasonably prices highway board
signs and Facebook ads geared toward leisure, local travel. Conversation continued regarding
weddings, meetings and groups.
DU PAGE CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU UPDATE
Beth speaks of the importance of making hotel guests feel comfortable, and the need for signage. She invites
everyone to a Zoom call regarding these concerns. Beth goes on to share that she was part of a virtual tour of the
Natatorium with many swim organizations, they received an RFP for 190 participant event. Conversation shifts back
to the need for a collaborative effort to ease the anxiety about staying in hotels, signage, letting people know that
businesses are doing the best they can to keep patrons safe. She shares that slowly leisure business is coming back,
but that it will be a two year process before hotel demand comes back.
Tim Geiges gives a summary of current events that have affected the mall. They opened on May 29th for restaurants
with outdoor seating, they had to close two days later because of the civil unrest. They reopened the next Thursday,
and patio service has been good. He spoke of having an influx of people either coming from the city or people not
wanting to go to the city. The stores are opening slowly, they are gradually getting back to capacity.
Kathy Dwyer shared that business is very slowly returning, mostly last minute and day of. The Drake is gearing to
open on July 1St, Hyatt Lodge is looking at July 10th to open. Rick Ginex shared that the Village will be discounting
the cost of liquor licenses for hotels and restaurants and that Village Hall is looking to re-open Village hall for
patrons on June 291h

A. David Carlin motioned to approve the minutes from the May 14, 2020 Meeting. Seconded
by Kathy Dwyer. Voice vote. Motion carried.
