Aerial Spraying to Combat Gypsy Moths to Start in May
Oak Brook, Illinois (May 21, 2009) — In order to manage the Gypsy Moth population the
Village of Oak Brook will be conducting aerial sprays over a 1,000 acre area. The treatment
consists of a fine aerial spray application of Bacillus Thuringiensis, subspecies kurstaki or BTK.
BTK is a naturally occurring, soil dwelling bacterium that is highly effective in controlling Gypsy
moth populations but is not harmful to people, pets, livestock, migrating birds, bees or the
environment.
The initial application is scheduled for May 215=, weather depending. However, to insure the
best possible results, a second aerial application will follow about a week later. The
applications will be conducted by relatively low flying helicopters utilizing a global positioning
system (GPS) for precise navigation and spray application. .
Should you have any questions regarding the aerial spraying, please contact the Village of
Oak Brook at (630) 368-6270.
