Oal lroolc police Department Offers Drowning Prevention Tips
Oak Brook, IIS July 2014. As the summer months heat up, the Oak Brook Police Department
wants to remind everyone to be safe, especially near bodies of water. Drowning is the leading
cause of injury or death in children ages one to four. Most drowning incidents occur in familiar
settings, such as the family pool or the pool of a friend or neighbor.
It takes only seconds, not minutes, for a child to drown. Children don't make noise as they go
underwater; they sink quietly. Children under water can lose consciousness within two minutes,
and brain damage occurs at five minutes. Even with adults present and in the water with
children, drowning can still occur.
To have a safe summer, take note of the following life saving tips:
• Never take your eyes off a child when he or she is in or near any body of water
• Never leave a child alone near a pool, or open body of water
• Swimming lessons, life preservers, and floatation devices do not prevent a child from
drowning
• Learn how to administer lifesaving techniques to children, such as cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR)
• Keep a cell phone nearby in the event of an emergency
Remember to dial 911 first and yell for help before administering aid. Continue t4 render aid until
fust
responders advise you to stop.
