Saved by the Safety Belt Award
Oak Brook, IL— December 2014. On 12-09-14 Chief James Kruger and Sergeant Brian
Strockis presented the Saved by the Safety Belt Club Award to Besa Bajraktari, at the
Village Board Meeting. This award is given by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois
Association of Chiefs of Police.
On October 13, 2014 at 7:34 AM, the Oak Brook Police and Fire Departments responded to
a traffic crash with possible injuries at York and 22nd Street. Upon arrival Officers observed
a pickup truck perpendicular to the traffic lanes after driving over the raised median, striking
an SUV. There was extensive damage to both vehicles. Three people involved in the crash
were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The SUV’s airbags were deployed, and Ms.
Bajraktari was wearing her safety belt.
Chief Kruger stated, “The Fire Chief and I responded to this particular crash and personally
observed the damage to the vehicles involved, and I can tell you that it caused significant
damage, and the potential for severe injuries was there.”
