Saturday, January 21 @ 2 pm Cabaret performers Matt and Cynthia Gruel belt out classic hits including: Steppin' Out with My Baby, All of Me, I Got Rhythm, Luck Be a Lady, Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, It Don't Mean a Thing, Sweet Home Chicago, and many others! Each selection is cleverly introduced with interesting background facts about the many composers and famous artists who performed the songs including Frank Sinatra, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Ella Fitzgerald, Harold Arlen, and Louis Armstrong. Beacon Book Club Thursday, January 26 @ 10 am Beacon Book Club Special Edition: Trading Titles Love books? Love to talk about or hear about books? Then this is the book club session for you! This month we encourage you to read whatever you want, then join us to share your thoughts about it. Feel free to bring one or many of your most recent and favorite reads. The more the merrier! Recurring Programs English Language Conversation Group Tuesdays @ 6 pm Practice your speaking and listening skills. Knit Pickers Tuesdays @ 7 pm Work on your projects in the company of other knitters. Drop-In Tech Help Wednesdays @ 1-2 pm Basic one-on-one help with computers and devices. Movie Matinee Monday, Jan. 2 @ 1 pm Elvis Holiday Hours Closed January 1, 2023 Holiday Lights Recycling through January 13 You can recycle your broken or unwanted lights at the Library through our partnership with Elgin Recycling! Look for the bin in the staff parking lot (across from the book returns). Since the box is outside, you can drop off any time that is convenient for you. Only holiday lights are accepted. Please do not include other holiday decorations! Adult Winter Reading January 7 - March 4 Join us for our winter reading program! Stop by beginning January 7 to receive your reading log and a special treat to kick off the New Year! Just read or listen to 5 books checked out from the OBPL and write a brief review to share with others. When you complete your log, come to the Adult Reference Desk for your completion prize and enter a drawing for a $25 Barnes & Noble gift certificate. Storytimes Registration required and masks encouraged. Afterschool Storytime with Miss Theresa Wednesday, January 25 @ 4:30 pm Children attend this program independently. They will wiggle and giggle while they interact with books, songs and a craft. Ages 4-7 Toddling 2s & 3s Storytime with Miss Theresa Thursday, January 26 @ 10:30 am This is a perfect program to introduce little ones to the library. We'll enjoy some good books, sing songs, dance, do fingerplays, and more! We'll also make a craft related to the theme of the day. A caregiver must stay with each child during the program. Ages 2-3 Weekly Programs Registration required and masks encouraged. Crafternoons with Miss Brigitte Thursdays, January 12 & 19 @ 4:30 pm Join Miss Brigitte’s craft club! Every week we will do a new craft based on an artist or theme! There is a strict age requirement as some crafts require advanced fine motor skills. Ages 8-12 Saturday Morning Chess Club Saturdays, January 14, 21 & 28 @ 10-11:30 am This club is open to players who already have an understanding of the game. It is a club, not a team, so players are welcome to join us to improve their game and play. Ages 6 & up Sponsored by the Friends of the Library Special Programs Registration required and masks encouraged. See the Show, Become the Pro! Juggling Show & Workshop with Jason Kollum Saturday, January 14 @ 1 pm This is a super hit, total-participation, interactive program where kids of all ages become jugglers & balancers just like Pro Juggler Jason Kollum! The show will WOW all ages as balls, clubs, rings, spinning balls, giant beanbag chairs & much more will all be sent flying through the air, all leading up to the big balancing & juggling finale that will have everybody on the edge of their seats! Then, everyone will get a chance to try out some interactive skills they got to see in the show! Kids get to see the show…then THEY get to become the pro! Tuesday, January 19 @ 10:30 am Join the Language Labs as they share the traditions that surround Chinese New Year. There will be pictures, videos, songs & telling of legends as to why this holiday is celebrated. We will also share a craft for you to create! Ages 2 & up Youth Pickup Crafts Stop by and pick up a fun craft to make at home! Friday, January 13 - Chinese New Year Friday, January 27 - Sweater Weather Winter Reading Program Step Right Up & Read a Book! Saturday, January 7 – Saturday, March 4 Children of all ages are invited to take part in the program. Reading Logs will be available in the Library or may be printed from our website on the start date. All those who complete their logs will receive a finishing prize & be entered into a drawing to win a grand prize. Teen Volunteer Program The Library offers volunteer opportunities to students entering 8th - 12th grade. Volunteer duties include assisting library staff with material handling and sorting, helping librarians with in-person children’s programming and other special projects. How & When to Apply Volunteer Session Application Window February through May Dec. 15 – Jan. 15 Applications for the 2023 winter/spring volunteer session are available online and in the Library.
