Summer Reading Program June 8 – August 3 Join us for our summer reading program! Stop by beginning June 8 to pick up your reading log and a special tasty treat to kick off the summer! Read or listen to 5 books checked out from the OBPL and write a brief review to share with others. Turn your log in at the Reference Desk to be entered into a drawing for one of multiple gift cards to local businesses and restaurants. Illinois Watercolor Society Meeting & Demonstration Saturday, June 1 @ 2 pm Featured artist Tony Armendariz is an award-winning contemporary realist artist living and painting in Palatine, Illinois. His work focuses on figurative subjects rendered in watercolor. Coin & Currency Appraisals Wednesday, June 5 @ 7 pm Lifelong coin collector Dave Ekstrom offers a presentation on coin and currency values as well as gold jewelry and silver values. There will be an opportunity to have a few of your coins and gold or silver items appraised for free after the presentation. The Magic of Oz: Judy Garland Historical Portrayal Monday, June 10 @ 7 pm Join us in celebrating the life of Judy Garland! Historical presenter, Michelle Gibbons, will delight audiences with a theatrical portrayal of the beloved actress. Learn about Garland's worldwide fame, childhood, and struggles from her point of view. Katie Kostner Guitar Concert Wednesday, June 26 @ 7pm With her blend of pop, rock, country, 80's & 90's music, Katie has something for everyone! Katie is known for producing her own series of Facebook Quarantine Concerts, leading to a feature story on WGN news. Beacon Book Club - Tom Lake by Ann Patchett Thursday, June 27 @ 10 am For June, we will be reading a novel about the secret lives of parents and how we become who we are. Summer Reading June 8 – August 3 Read as much as you can to earn prizes! This year's theme reminds us to Read, Renew, Repeat! Reading logs will be available to print from our website or pick up at the Library on or after June 8. Each reading log is based upon age & will have you tracking the amount of time spent reading. Fill out as many reading logs as you can before returning them by August 3. Each reading log will be an entry to win one of our grand prizes displayed at the Library. Ages 2 & up Summer Reading Kick-Off Party! Saturday, June 8 Tall Tales & Silly Songs @ 11 am Todd Downing has been entertaining and educating kids for years. With his guitar, puppets and unexpected quips, he keeps audiences surprised and delighted. Registration is required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Ages 2-8 Brook Forest Storytime @ 1-2 pm Join Brook Forest Principal Dr. Andrea Prola and Library Media Specialist Emma Underwood as they promote summer reading with a story or two! Foam Party! @ 2-3 or 3-4 pm Chicago Foam Company brings the fun with a high-powered foam cannon that shoots billions of tiny bubbles. They will play kid-friendly dance music and supply beach balls. Wearing a swimsuit and water shoes is advised. A waiver must be signed by the parents of the participants. In the north parking lot. Registration is required. Kona Ice Truck @ 2-4 pm The Kona Ice truck will be at the Library handing out free 9oz kiddie cups to the first 100 patrons. Storytimes Registration required Toddling 2s & 3s Storytime with Miss Theresa Tuesdays, June 4 and 18 @ 10:30 - 11 am We'll read books, sing songs, dance, do fingerplays & more! We'll also make a craft related to the theme of the day. A caregiver must stay with each child during the program. Ages 2-3 Once Upon a Storytime with Miss Soha Tuesday, June 11 @ 10:30 – 11:30 am Dive into captivating tales, lively songs & creative crafts! Let your imagination soar as we embark on exciting adventures through the world of storytelling. Ages 4-7 Bimonthly & Monthly Programs Registration required Lego Free-Build with Miss Dominique Tuesdays, June 4 & 18 @ 4:30 - 5:30 pm Join us for a Lego free-build and let your imagination run wild! Finished projects will be displayed in the display case until the next session! Legos are provided. All Ages Culinary Explorers Academy with Miss Soha Monday, June 17 @ 4:30 - 5:30 pm Learn essential kitchen skills in a supervised environment. Dress for mess, tie up long hair & bring your appetite for adventure! Inform us of any food allergies before the program for a safe & enjoyable experience for all! Ages 4-7 Crafternoons with Miss Brigitte Thursday, June 20 @ 4:45 - 5:45 pm Each Crafternoon session will focus on a different artist, artistic concept or summer theme! We will be focusing on art with recyclable materials. There is a STRICT age limit for this program. Ages 8-12 Special Programs Registration required True Balance Karate Class Monday, June 10 @ 11 am This is an introductory class to karate. Martial arts will not only teach you self-defense, but focus and respect. A waiver must be signed by the parents of participants. Ages 6 & up Window Painting with Miss Brigitte Monday, June 17 @ 1-3 pm Space is extremely limited, however you can split a window with ONE friend. Designs must be consistent with the summer reading theme of READ, RENEW, REPEAT. All designs will be approved before you begin painting, so come with ideas! This is not a drop in event; you will need the entire time to do this project. Dress for mess. Grades 6 & up Young Artists Workshop: Upcycled Folk Art Saturday, June 22 @ 11 am – 12:30 pm Join Terri Murphy as she guides young patrons in creating a cool project using crushed aluminum cans, cardboard & other household objects. Participants will assemble a character and paint a background to create a unique piece of art! Sponsored by Friends of the Library. Ages 8-13 Book Signing Event: Rhett: The Kind Little Corgi Saturday, June 22 @ 2 pm Join children’s book author Janet Sutherland- Madden as she reads her book, Rhett: The Kind Little Corgi. She will share her inspiration to write and what the process entailed. Rhett, the star of the book, will be there to meet and greet! Urdu Language Storytime Monday, June 24 @ 4:30 - 5:30 pm Join Dr. Ghazala Siddiqui as she shares her love of the Urdu language! She will begin with a story in Urdu followed with an introduction to learning the language. Ages 4-10 Magic Workshop with Gary Kantor Saturday, June 29 @ 1:15 – 2 pm Gary Kantor will teach card tricks, vanishing effects and more. In addition to the fun of magic, he will emphasize the importance of education and reading for children. Each child receives a magic kit to take home. Ages 5-12
