‘Tis The Season: Holiday Traditions from Radio’s Golden Age
Sunday, December 1 @ 2 pm
For many people, the holidays are a time of traditions, & there were plenty of entertaining traditions during the
“Golden Age” of radio. From Jack Benny’s annual shopping trips to Lionel Barrymore’s portrayal of
Ebeneezer Scrooge, Steve Darnall, host of WDCB’s Those Were The Days, revisits classic seasonal sounds
from radio’s past.
Holiday Card Workshop with Artist Terri Murphy
Wednesday, December 4 @ 7 pm
Gain an understanding of block printing by using various tools & techniques to carve an image onto a
Styrofoam printing plate. You will ink the plate to craft a holiday card of your own! As a bonus,
you get to take home your printing plate to reproduce on more cards at home!
Urdu Literature Event
Wednesday, December 18 @ 7 pm
Join Dr. Ghazala Siddiqui in celebrating the Urdu language. We invite all patrons to share an Urdu poem,
a favored excerpt from a text, or something you have written.
Cook the Book Club with Librarian Dominique: Cookie Swap!
Saturday, December 21 @ 1 pm
Cook the Book Club is the perfect place to share tips & tricks, ideas & information. Pick a recipe that
fits the monthly theme, either from a book at the library or from your own personal cookbook.
Bring in a portion to feed 8-10 people. The library will provide the rest!
All ages welcome; families encouraged.
Holiday Light Recycling in Partnership with Elgin Recycling

Drop off your mini-lights, C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights & extension cords in the marked
box in the Library parking lot. All colors & lengths accepted. Garland, live & fake trees, wreaths, &
other decorations NOT accepted.

Winter Reading 2024-2025
All Ages (Birth - 100 years!)
December 23, 2024 - February 1, 2025
Kids:
Read as much as you can this winter! This year we want you to EXPLORE WITH THE LIBRARY.
Many of our programs will reflect this theme.
Reading logs will be available to print at home or pick up from the youth desk on December 23, 2024.
Each reading log will have you track the amount of time spent reading, NOT the number of books read.
Return your completed reading logs to us before February 1 to receive a completion prize bag.
A grand prize drawing will also be held. Winners will be contacted via phone after February 7.
Adults:
Read 5 books from OBPL & review them!
Reading logs will be available to print at home or pick up from the adult desk on December 23, 2024.
When you sign up, you will receive a full sized candy bar! Return your completed reading logs to us before
February 1 to receive a completion prize.
A grand prize drawing will also be held. Winners will receive a $100 gift card to a local Oak Brook
restaurant. Winners will be contacted via phone after February 7.

Teen Volunteer Program
The Library offers volunteer opportunities to students entering 8th through 12th grades. Volunteer duties include
assisting library staff with patron hold requests, sorting & shelving materials, & helping librarians with in-person children’s
programming like story times & other special projects.
Applications for the 2024 winter volunteer session are available online & in the library. Each applicant must complete an
application & a short alphabetization quiz to participate. Volunteers receive a confirmation letter of their hours at the end
of the session for any extracurricular service hour obligations.

Eric Carle Scavenger Hunt
All of December
Find the hidden caterpillars around the youth area to spell out the hidden message! Once you
do, bring your completed sheet to the youth desk to receive a prize! This passive program is
intended to encourage children in creative thinking & problem solving by themselves.
We encourage all parents & caregivers to let their kids try to complete the hunt independently!

Kid’s December Decoration Workshop
Saturday, December 14 @ 1 pm
The December Decoration Workshop is a way for children to craft several
winter & holiday-themed ornaments for their friends, family, or themselves. There is
a strict age limit on this program. This is not a drop in event; the program will take
90 minutes. Please register each child individually due to customized prep of materials.
Ages 8 & up
Window Painting with Miss Brigitte
Monday, December 23 @ 1 pm
Express yourself with Miss Brigitte in this much-requested art program! Space is limited for
this program, however you can split a window with ONE friend. Designs must be consistent
with the winter reading theme EXPLORE WITH THE LIBRARY. All designs will be approved
by Miss Brigitte before you begin painting, so come with thoughts! This is not a drop in
event; you will need the entire time (90 minutes) to do this project. Dress for mess.
Grades 6 & up
Life Size Candy Land
Friday, December 27 @ 2 pm
Reading is Sweet & so is our own life-size game of Candyland! Players will be the
ones moving throughout the game board, hopping to King Candy first! But don't be
fooled, those who get stuck throughout the game may get some rewards of their own.
Registration for EACH child for a specific 15 minute time slot required.

Winter Lights STEM with Miss Irene
Monday, December 30 @ 4:30 pm
Create light in the dark winter months by building & experimenting with a
homemade electrical circuit. There is a STRICT age requirement for this program.

Winter Break Bingo with Miss Theresa & Special Guest

Join Miss Theresa & a special guest as they play this classic game!
Kick off your Winter Reading with a win! Ages 6 & up
