R-558 - 04/14/1992 - POLICE AGREEMNT - Resolutions �N11N111��t►, D.Lar.S -MAW ACADEMY y--141-9 2, RESOLUTION R- 558 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING TM DEVELOPMT OF A REGIONAL POLICE TRAINING ACADM WHEREAS, the provision of police services is a fundamental aspect of municipal government and integral to this function is having professionally trained law enforcement officers; and i WHEREAS, it has been estimated that in the next attritions over 11000 now t officers will need to be trained in region and the growth of police departments; and WHEREAS, there are currently six accredited police training academies in the state: the Chicago Police Academy, the Cook County Police Academy, the Belleville Area College, the State Police Academy and the Lincoln Land Police Academy in Springfield, and the Police Training Institute in Champaign; and WHEREAS, the Chicago Police Academy will be closed to suburban departments for an indefinite period so that the City of Chicago can meet its training needs, leaving the Cook County Police Academy as the only local training facility available to suburban police departments; and WHEREAS, the tuition and travel expenses associated with sending a new recruit to the two downstate police academies often exceeds $2,700; and WHEREAS, due to the heavy demand on the current training academies, suburban police departments must often wait several months for a new recruit to be accepted into a training class, hindering the department's ability to provide a full force of police officers; and WHEREAS, the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association and the College of DuPage have petitioned the Illinois Local Government Law Enforcement Officers Training Board to certify the College of DuPage as a Regional Police Recruit Training Academy to meet the needs of the collar counties; and WHEREAS, such training academy would be operated by the Business and consisting of aI e representatives from the college and local dlaw enforcement professionals; and WHER AS, given that Ss% of the police officers in -the state work north of Interstate 80, a Police Training Academy at the College of DuPage would be easily accessible to a number of law enforcement officials, and WHEREAS, the cost of training nine recruits at the local academy will be approximately one-half the cost to send an officer to the two downstate police academies; and WHEREAS, the training provided at a local academy would cover the basilic curriculum required by the state, while also familiarizing recruits with the unique needs of the region; I�� Resolution R-,,U§_ Supporting the Developsent li of a Police Training Academy Page 2 NON, THSR19FORE, BE IT RESOLVED SY THE PRESIDENT AND HOARD Of TRVSTESS OF THE VILLAGE OF OAK BROOK, Du PAGE AND COOK COUNTIES, ILLINOIS as follows: Section is That it supports the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association n's efforts to develop a Regional Police Training Academy to be located at the College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
