The new recycling carts were funded in part by a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity with the Village's contractor Allied Waste providing the remainder of the cost. "With funding from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Allied Waste, the Village of Oak Brook was able to purchase recycling carts for distribution to our residents. The Village Board and I hope that having recycling carts will simplify recycling for our residents and increase the amount of material recycled. In the past, many residents had to bring multiple recycling containers to the curb each week, which worked, but was inconvenient. The new 65 -gallon recycling carts will hold as much material as three standard recycling bins and allow all recycling material to be mixed in a single container," said Village President, John W. Craig. With the addition of recycling carts, Oak Brook should be able to increase the amount of material recycled by about 20 percent, which will help preserve the environment and reduce disposal costs. President Craig credited the State of Illinois's emphasis on the environment and making this project feasible. "Our residents have told us they support more environmental programs, the utilization of green technology, and are committed to sustainability. This is just another step in making Oak Brook a good global citizen," Craig continued. "The Village thanks both the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Allied Waste for providing partial funding for the new recycling carts, which will be delivered during the first week of April."
