Oak Brook Police Department (630)368-8734 ehnfft oak-brookore Oak Brook Police Officers Walk 70 Miles for Charity OAK BROOK, Ill. —May 2011— On Saturday, May 14, 2011 five (5) members of the Oak Brook Police Department participated in the Relay for Life in Bolingbrook, a fundraising event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Sergeant Mark King and Officers George Peterson, Luis Perez, Andrew Franczak, and Erica Huff raised over $2,300 in donations for the American Cancer Society, and then walked over 70 miles (combined) to support those who have either survived cancer or whose lives have been cut short from this affliction. From 2:00pm on Saturday until 5:00am Sunday morning, Oak Brook Officers walked the designated Relay for Life route near the Bolingbrook Town Center in adverse weather conditions, setting personal distance records. Officer George Peterson was determined to surpass his 2010 record. "At last year's Relay [for Life], I walked 14 miles. This year, I walked 20 miles. Each Oak Brook Officer here today is walking for people we work with or people in our personal lives who currently have cancer, whose cancer is in remission, or have lost the battle to cancer. Cancer is something that has an impact on everyone in some way. This is our chance to walk for them," said Officer Peterson. Rain or shine, the Relay for Life goes on. "This year the weather was pretty tough to walk in. It was cold and rainy. We found ourselves wanting to stop and call it a night. But then we reminded ourselves why we were here, and those people who lost their fight with cancer wouldn't mind the cold or rain if they could take just a few more steps" said Officer Luis Perez. Next year, the Oak Brook Police Department team hopes to increase participation, fundraising, and reach new walking goals. "25 miles.... that's the record for miles walked during the Relay for Life. I walked 20 miles this year. Next year, maybe I'll break the record!" said Officer Peterson.
