SUBJECT: Recognition of Job Performance
As you know, Ambulance Unit #900 was involved in a traffic

accident on January 6, 1981, at the intersection of 31st
Street. and Meyers Road while transporting a victim of a
• previous traffic accident to Good Samaritan Hospital. On
board at the time were Firefighter/EMT's Schultz and Meyers.
At the time of the accident, Firefighter Meyers was stand-
ing unrestrained, in the patient compartment attending to
his patient. He had no advanced warning of the impending
crash. Upon impact, Firefighter Meyers was forced into
the. interior compartmentation of the patient area, severely.
injuring his right collar bone and right arm.

When the vehicle came to rest, and Meyers wa e able to
extricate himself from the compartments, he looked through
the window into the cab where Firefighter Schultz lay un-
conscious, Recognizing the immediate need to get to Fire-
fighter Schultz, and insure that a proper airway existed!
and realizing that his primary commitment was to his patient,
he quickly.ascertained .that she had not sustained any
further injuries. He attempted to calm the patient, who was
understandably somewhat hysterical, and explain to her that
it. would be necessary for him *:o leave her for awhile and to
try not to be too concerned.
After exiting the patient compartment, Meyers attempted to
reach Firefighter Schultz through the door. on the passenger's
side of the cab. Due to damages received upon impact, the
door was jammed and would not open. He proceeded around to
the driver's side, was able to open this door, gain access
to Firefighter Schultz, and insure that an airway and cardio-
pulmonary function existed, and attempt to apply a cervical
collar. It was then that Meyers realized that he did not
have full use of his right arm. (Firefighter Meyers is
righthanded.)
With this accomplished, Meyers, in a very professional manner,
notified the Communications Center by radio, of his predica-
ment, that there were injuries involved, and that an ambu-
lance and help would be needed. .

At this time Firefighter Schultz was regaining consciousness,
Meyers recheckedaSchultz's basic life sustaining functions,
and instructed him to stay put until help arrived. Meyers I'f
then proceeded to the third vehicle involved in the accident
to check for injuries to the driver. Determining that there
were none, he then proceeded dome 31st Street to where the
first vehicle involved came to an eventual rest, to check
for injuries to the driver of that vehicle. Again determin°
ing that there were none, be returned to. Unit#900 to attend
to Firefighter Schultz. At this time additional help was
;;. arriving on the scene.
fit : Firefighter Meyers will be the first (and indeed was) to
state that he was only doing his job, and I will be the first
to agree with him. I'm sure that there -are ethers within our 1i
organization that would have performed lust as admirably under
�•• similar circumstances.
It's the type of performance that is
expected of those of us whom are involved with public safety,
and for that reason tends to be taken for granted, and goes
on prett y mach Noticed.
Firefighter Meyers did his job, and did it well, to the extent

that I believe it is worthy of special notice. It is for that

t. reason that I call these actions to your attention.

RECOMMENDATION: I am recommending that Firefighter John Meyers
be considered for a letter of Commendation for
outstanding service performed under extreme conditions

Attached is a letter from Lt. Arthur Mager regarding the
accident involving the ambulance on January 6, 1981 . I '
After reviewing the memo and discussing the incident with
other personnel, combined with my own observations while on
the scene, I feel that Firefighter Meyers did an outstanding job
in caring for his patient, the driver of the other car, and the ! j
driver of the ambulance, Firefighter Schultz, who was unconscious
at the time. Firefighter Meyers performed his duties to these
people while he himself had sustained severe :injuries.
Ken, I would like you to understand that all of our men
appreciate letters of thanks and recognition, but we must remember !! �
that this is the type of action we have come to expect from our
firefighters at all times.

The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by . •
President Cerne in the Samuel E. Dean Board Room of the Village Commons.
A. Appointment - Recording Secretary
Due to the absence of Village Clerk Lakosil, President Cerne called for a
motion to appoint LaVerne Skale as Recording Secretary for the purposes of
this meeting.
Trustee Congreve moved - seconded by Trustee Reynolds....
That LaVerne Skale be appointed Recording Secretary for this meeting.

of Oak Brook, Ordinance G-177, as amended

That we amend Ordinance 0-177, as amended, adding Section 1-1301.1 Handicapped
Parking Areas and that reading of same be waived.
